37 million people in the US struggle to find enough to eat. Millions of American citizens have relied on food stamps to ensure that they receive the basic amount of daily nutrition. However, with the ongoing pandemic, the stress has only worsened. Food banks report running so low on staples they may need to ration their supplies. People who have not previously relied on food aid are also reportedly in greater need.

The case is worse in hospitals. With an obvious increase in hospitalizations, many lower-income families face difficulties in paying for food in hospital cafeterias as they wait for their ill family members. Although hospitals often cover the cost of meals for these people if they express their issues, the increase in the prevalence of the issue makes it hard for hospitals to have enough funding to do so.

We partnered with the University of California Los Angeles Hospital to raise donations to fund the meals for these families. Right now, our goal is to reach $5,000, which will help support at least 500 meals through $10 vouchers.

India’s devastating crisis is stealing lives. India faced the world’s worst outbreak of Coronavirus with daily case counts shattering global records. Families were desperate to find a hospital bed for their loved ones.

We aimed to raise funds to purchase oxygen concentrators to aid those fighting for their lives. Update: Through donation efforts, we raised about $29,000, exceeding our $20,000 goal—enabling us to buy 12 concentrators.

We purchased 12 oxygen concentrators and shipped them to rural hospitals across India that receive limited government funding, including:

• Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, Karnataka
• Government District Head Hospital, Tamil Nadu
• Bangalore Baptist Hospital, Karnataka
• Vidya Sagar Hospital, Andhra Pradesh
• Community Health Center, Wardhannapet, Telangana
• District Combined Hospital Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh
• Khed Covid Center, Maharashtra

Update: $3,000 donated to each firefighter. This project is officially closed.

The Silverado and Blue Ridge fires burned over 7,000 acres of land and forced over 100,000 people in Southern California to evacuate. Two firefighters were critically injured while fighting the blaze and were treated at Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana.

These two firefighters (ages 26 and 31) suffered second and third degree burns.

We met with the families of injured firefighters Dylan Van Iwaarden and Phi Li, fire chiefs from the Orange County Fire Authority, and a representative from Mayor Farrah Khan’s office to donate the checks.

We received a certificate from the Orange County Fire Association and the Rotary Club of Irvine and met with Fire Chief Roberson, President Harish Murthy (Irvine Rotary), President Cedric Campbell, and Governor Lucy Walters (Irvine Rotary).

Doctors across the country faced shortages for masks. During the COVID-19 outbreak, hospitals nationwide struggled with the influx of patients, and doctors and nurses lacked masks that would protect them effectively. Call of Humanity raised funds to buy PPE face shields for local Southern California hospitals, including Mission Hospital (Mission Viejo) and Kaiser Permanente Irvine.

On your birthday, you can choose to make a difference by spreading gifts and joy to less privileged children. Instead of presents, ask for cash donations to fund items for care packages. At the celebration, assembling packages can be a group activity that involves everyone, teaches the value of sharing, and allows participants to experience the joy of giving. Your child can then distribute packages at the center and interact with the youth there.

Packages can be donated to Orangewood Foundation, a nonprofit that helps house foster children in a transitional stage and provides resources to youth in emergency situations and those who have been victims of abuse. We can also work with you to donate to any nonprofit organization of your choice.

Please note: Care packages are individual-sized packages distributed among the children at the center.

Fundraiser — Surgical Operation Theater

Goal: $11,000 (Achieved). Our aim was to collect enough funds to set up a surgical operation theater at K.M.G General Hospital, a small hospital in a rural town in India. This impacts thousands of people in the area and increases access to medical and emergency resources.

Only 10% of people have access to the support they require, a situation exacerbated in low-income or developing nations. Call of Humanity partnered with Narayan Seva Sansthan, an organization providing prosthetic limbs through measurement and fitment camps. We provided artificial limbs to over 50 patients in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India.

25% of people with disabilities aged 18 or older participate in a sports-related activity at least once a week.

Call of Humanity raised $1,050 to support the Indian Men’s Cricket Team for the Blind. The team had 21 members, ranging from complete to partial blindness. They play a version of cricket using a ball with a bell inside so they can hear it.
